Knowing not a thing about Navy life, I fully expected to be lost at best or bored at worst. However once I started reading, I was unable to stop thinking about the well-defined characters and what they would encounter next. Brindley outlines a little bit of all of us at one point or another in our lives within each of the characters. Some I hated, some I loved, one I rooted for. The author’s own experience in the Navy helps to craft a compelling story which renders the reader aboard, as if they too were part of the journey – … Continue reading bethannebeth, Amazon Review for Inside the Skin

…Mr. Brindley’s writing is refreshing and clear. The text is clear of typos and grammar errors that mar so many other books, so you can concentrate on the story. He communicates richly the facets of navy life, and we are given enough description to vividly picture the places on the ship such as the quarters, the bowels of the tanks, and the ship’s mess. Ultimately, this book examines prejudice and assumptions and wrestles with the inevitability of our actions: Are we programmed to act as we do, or are we free to act in whatever way we please? Do our … Continue reading Mark Bowes, Amazon Review for Inside the Skin

Hauntingly beautiful. Brindley is able to evoke deep, thoughtful and often aching emotion in just a few lines. His writing took me by surprise. Continue reading Anonymous Amazon Review for Short Verses & Other Curses

Self-made and/or naturally insight-endowed, Kurt Brindley has the soul of a poet; further, he has the soul of a warrior poet. Continue reading Paul Xylinides, Amazon Review of Short Verses & Other Curses

This is one of the best books that I’ve read in a long time. The ending, though appropriate and in line with the narrative, is very unexpected. That’s how brilliant this masterful writer of suspense, and wordsmith is; it should be made into a film. I hope you read this Mr Brindley because this is a serious offer. Please consider collaborating on a screenplay with me. Continue reading maffism, Amazon Review for Inside the Skin

I recently read this book and recommend it to anyone that enjoys a gripping, witty, realistic and extremely clever story that tugs at the heart. The characters come alive with vivid details that accurately portray events and life in the Navy. I got to know each one of the unique personalities that came together to create such an amusing group of people that struggle to find their way. What a surprise. I was expecting a testosterone-infused missive about a bunch of sailors. I found an interesting take on the impact of the first female sailors. An added bonus was the thoughtful observation regarding sensitivity training. Mr. Brindley probably could have written the manual on sensitivity training as evidenced by the passage in the story about a mother and son. The true lives and stories of military men and women are often underserved in literature, despite being full of the kind of extreme drama and conflict that makes most great novels compelling. Brinkley offers a brief, but vivid and powerful glimpse of sailors aboard a US Navy ship in the 1990s, a pivotal time of change in military culture. It’s raw and profane yet ends in a surprising emotional epiphany. Highly recommended. Continue reading KathyC, Amazon Review for Leave: A Short Story

I’m honestly surprised how much I liked this story. There’s a lot of intensity and male bravado, but also great depth and a bit of a surprise ending. It’s a quick read, but it gives you much to think about. Highly recommended! Continue reading Christi Hartwell, Amazon Review for Leave: A Short Story
